On the Origin of Gold

Where did the gold in your jewelry originate? No one is completely sure. The average abundance of gold in our Solar System is higher than can be explained by the early universe, stars, or typical supernovae. Some astronomers suggest that neutron-rich heavy elements like gold might form in rare, neutron-rich explosions, such as the collision of neutron stars.
