Retrograde Mars

NASA APOD · Tunç Tezel
COSMIC MESSAGE

Mars usually moves in one direction against the distant stars. But every two years, Earth passes Mars, making it appear to reverse course. This retrograde motion makes Mars seem to loop backward in the sky. It is an illusion, caused by our own planet's faster orbit around the Sun.
