The Colliding Spiral Galaxies of Arp 271

NASA APOD · Gemini Observatory
COSMIC MESSAGE

The two spiral galaxies, NGC 5426 and NGC 5427, are in the process of a slow collision, known as Arp 271. Over tens of millions of years, their gravitational forces will distort each other, but the individual stars within them are unlikely to collide. This interaction will eventually lead to a merger, forming a single, larger galaxy.
