The Horsehead Nebula in Orion

NASA APOD · Adam Block
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Horsehead Nebula, also known as Barnard 33, is one of the most identifiable nebulae in the sky. It is part of a large, dark, molecular cloud in Orion. The unusual shape was first discovered on a photographic plate in the late 1800s. The red glow comes from hydrogen gas behind the nebula, ionized by the bright star Sigma Orionis. A blue reflection nebula, NGC 2023, surrounds the bright star at the lower left.
