The Whale Galaxy, NGC 4631, is a spiral galaxy seen edge-on, resembling a cosmic herring. Located 25 million light-years away in Canes Venatici, it is similar in size to our own Milky Way. This color image reveals its yellowish core, dark dust lanes, bright blue star clusters, and red star-forming regions.
