A Circumhorizontal Arc Over Ohio
NASA APOD · Todd Sladoje
COSMIC MESSAGE
Ice crystals floating high in cirrus clouds can act like tiny prisms. When the sun is high enough, these crystals split sunlight into its constituent colors. The result is a circumhorizontal arc, sometimes called a 'fire rainbow,' appearing parallel to the horizon. This one was photographed over Ohio.
