Gaia Reconstructs a Side View of our Galaxy

Since we are inside the Milky Way, we cannot take an actual picture of it from the side. However, the ESA's Gaia mission has mapped over a billion stars. This data allowed scientists to create a side view illustration of our galaxy. The illustration shows a very thin central disk, where our Sun and all visible stars reside. It also reveals the disk's slight warp, a surprising finding.
