Yesterday, a spent Centaur rocket upper stage impacted the Moon as part of the LCROSS mission. This image, taken in mid-infrared, shows the initial flash of the impact within the dark shadows of a lunar crater. The LCROSS spacecraft followed a few minutes later, and observatories on Earth also captured both events. Scientists are studying the debris plumes for signs of water.
