COSMIC MESSAGE

A paraselene, or moondog, shines brightly to the left of the nearly full moon over frozen Lake Ossiach in the Austrian Alps. This optical phenomenon is created by moonlight passing through hexagonal ice crystals in high cirrus clouds. Saturn is also visible through thin clouds near the center of the image.
