HCG 87: A Small Group of Galaxies

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Hickson Compact Group 87, or HCG 87, is a small group of galaxies slowly destroying themselves. These galaxies gravitationally stretch each other during their 100-million-year orbits around a common center. This pulling creates colliding gas, leading to bursts of star formation and feeding their active galactic nuclei.
