Mars's North Pole features a spiral structure, called Planum Boreum. Each winter, a new layer of frozen carbon dioxide, about a meter thick, forms on top of a permanent water-ice layer. Strong winds blowing down from the cap's center, combined with the planet's spin, contribute to this spiral pattern. This image is a mosaic generated in 2017.
