The Trifid Nebula is Stars and Dust

NASA APOD · Robert Gendler
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Trifid Nebula, also known as M20, is a region where stars are actively forming. The red-glowing gas is hydrogen, energized by high-energy starlight. Dark dust filaments, formed in the atmospheres of cool giant stars and supernova debris, lace through the nebula. It is visible with good binoculars toward the constellation of Sagittarius.
