The large blue galaxy on the right, AM 0644-741, is a ring galaxy. Its rim is an immense ring-like structure, 150,000 light-years in diameter, made of newly formed, massive stars. This shape resulted from a collision with a smaller intruder galaxy. When galaxies collide, their stars rarely hit each other, but the gravitational disruption can reshape them.
