A Laser Strike at the Galactic Center
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
Astronomers at the Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile use powerful lasers to create artificial stars in the upper atmosphere. These laser strikes allow them to measure atmospheric distortions in real-time. By constantly imaging these excited high-altitude atoms, they can adjust the VLT's mirrors to correct for blurring. This adaptive optics technique provides sharper views of distant celestial objects, including the Galactic Center.
