COSMIC MESSAGE

An iridescent pileus cloud hovers over China, glowing with many colors. These clouds form when water droplets of a uniform size diffract sunlight in different amounts. This particular image, taken in Pu'er, Yunnan Province, also shows unusual ripples above the pileus cloud. The formation of a pileus cloud atop a cumulus cloud signals strong updrafts in the lower atmosphere.
