A Twilight Occultation

NASA APOD · Doug Zubenel
COSMIC MESSAGE

On December 6, a thin, one-day-old crescent Moon was visible low on the western horizon after sunset. The Moon also occulted Mars, passing in front of the planet. Some skygazers in North America were able to witness Mars re-emerge from behind the Moon's sunlit edge in the fading twilight. This telephoto image captures Mars as a pinprick of light, framed by silhouetted tree limbs.
