A Huge Solar Filament Erupts
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
This unusually long solar filament erupted from the Sun after hovering over its surface for over a week. The image sequence was taken by the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). SDO observes the Sun in specific wavelengths, here using ultraviolet light emitted by helium and X-ray light emitted by iron. This explosion created Coronal Mass Ejections, which dispersed high-energy plasma into the solar system.
