Polar Ring Galaxy NGC 660

NASA APOD · Stephen Leshin
COSMIC MESSAGE

NGC 660, a polar ring galaxy, lies in the constellation Pisces, over 20 million light-years away. Its peculiar appearance comes from a substantial population of stars, gas, and dust orbiting in rings nearly perpendicular to the galactic disk. This configuration may have been caused by the capture of material from a passing galaxy.
