The Solstice Moon's Eclipse

NASA APOD · Chris Hetlage
COSMIC MESSAGE

A full Moon slid into Earth's shadow during a total lunar eclipse, coinciding with the December Solstice. The Moon appeared a coppery red due to sunlight filtering through Earth's atmosphere into its shadow. This light is a composite of all the sunsets and sunrises seen from the Moon's perspective around the edges of a silhouetted Earth. North America had a prime view of the reddened lunar disk in the cold winter sky.
