COSMIC MESSAGE

NASA's NanoSail-D was the first solar sail spacecraft in low Earth orbit. This artist's illustration shows its very thin, 10-square-meter reflective sail unfurled. Solar sails like NanoSail-D and Japan's IKAROS use the small but constant pressure of sunlight to propel themselves through space, a concept first suggested by Johannes Kepler 400 years ago.
