MWC 922: The Red Square Nebula

NASA APOD · Peter Tuthill (Sydney U.) & James Lloyd (Cornell)
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Red Square Nebula, MWC 922, surrounds a hot star system. The nebula has an unusual square shape, and astronomers are not entirely sure why. This image combines infrared exposures from the Hale Telescope and the Keck-2 Telescope. One theory is that the central star or stars expelled cones of gas during a late stage of development.
