Supernovae in the Whirlpool
NASA APOD · R Jay Gabany
COSMIC MESSAGE
Spiral galaxies often have supernovae near their massive star-forming regions, which tend to be along their spiral arms. The Whirlpool Galaxy, M51, has hosted three Type II supernovae in the last seventeen years. These explosions are the deaths of massive stars, and they don't wander far from their birthplaces.
