On June 7, 2011, the Sun released a medium-sized solar flare, followed by a large eruption of magnetized plasma. The Solar Dynamics Observatory captured this event in extreme ultraviolet light. Cooler plasma rained back down to the Sun's surface, arcing along invisible magnetic field lines.
