Eclipse over the Acropolis

NASA APOD · Elias Politis
COSMIC MESSAGE

The total phase of the June 15 lunar eclipse lasted 100 minutes. This composite tracks the dark Moon above the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. Around 270 BCE, Greek astronomer Aristarchus also tracked lunar eclipse durations. He used geometry to calculate the Moon's distance, a remarkably accurate method for his time.
