The Sharpless 2-106 Nebula, or S106, is a star-forming region sculpted by the massive young star IRS 4. Born only 100,000 years ago, IRS 4's outflow creates the nebula's hourglass shape. A disk of gas and dust around IRS 4, visible in dark red, contributes to this structure. Gas near the star emits light, while dust farther away reflects it.
