Jumping Sundogs Over Thunderclouds

Videos have shown an unusual phenomenon above thunderclouds: rapid light changes. A leading hypothesis suggests that a lightning discharge temporarily alters the electric field above the cloud. This change re-orients charged ice crystals that were reflecting sunlight. The re-oriented crystals then scatter light differently, causing the observed changes in brightness.
