Star Formation in the Tarantula Nebula

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Tarantula Nebula, also known as 30 Doradus, is the most active star-forming region in the Local Group of galaxies. It lies in the Large Magellanic Cloud, our galactic neighbor. If it were as close as the Orion Nebula, it would fill half the night sky. The glowing red and pink gas indicates a massive emission nebula, with a bright knot of stars called R136 at its heart.
