GALEX: The Andromeda Galaxy

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Andromeda Galaxy, also known as M31, is only 2.5 million light-years away, making it our closest large galactic neighbor. This ultraviolet portrait from the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) satellite required 11 different image fields to capture its full extent. While visible light images show spiral arms, the GALEX view reveals them more like rings, dominated by hot, young stars.
