Venus Transit 2012
NASA APOD · Chris Hetlage
COSMIC MESSAGE
This week's Venus transit was a rare event, with the next one more than a century away. Since the invention of the telescope, there have only been eight such transits. Many modern telescopes, like the one that captured this image from Georgia, observed Venus in silhouette against the Sun. Using a narrowband H-alpha filter, the image shows the planet's round disk against a mottled solar surface with dark filaments.
