Northern Green Flash

NASA APOD · Göran Strand
COSMIC MESSAGE

From Frösön island in northern Sweden, the Sun set slowly a day after the summer solstice. During its final minute, this sequence of images captured a green and blue flash. These flashes are not a myth, but a real atmospheric phenomenon. They are caused by the Earth's atmosphere refracting sunlight, bending different colors of light at slightly different angles as the Sun dips below the horizon.
