A Sundial that Shows Solstice
NASA APOD · Jean-Marc Mari
COSMIC MESSAGE
This sundial, constructed by Jean Salins in 1980, is designed to spell out 'SOLSTICE' only twice a year. On the summer and winter solstices, the Sun's position allows light to stream through specific openings. This creates the word on the sundial's surface, marking the longest and shortest days of the year. It is located at the Ecole Supérieure des Mines de Paris in France.
