M45: The Pleiades Star Cluster

NASA APOD · Robert Gendler
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Pleiades, also known as the Seven Sisters or M45, is a famous open star cluster. It is about 400 light years away and spans 13 light years, containing over 3,000 stars. The brighter stars are surrounded by blue reflection nebulae, visible in this photograph. These nebulae are clouds of dust reflecting the starlight, giving the cluster its distinctive glow.
