Aurorae over Planet Earth

From orbit, the Suomi-NPP satellite captured North America at night, with a spectacular display of the Aurora Borealis over Quebec and Ontario. These visible light emissions, known as the northern lights, are caused by strong geomagnetic storms. Such storms trigger impressive aurorae that encircle the poles and extend to lower latitudes. This particular event was observed on October 8th.
