A Sun Pillar Over Sweden

NASA APOD · Gran Strand
COSMIC MESSAGE

When the air is cold and the Sun is rising or setting, falling ice crystals can reflect sunlight, creating a sun pillar. Ice forms flat, six-sided crystals that flutter to the ground, reflecting sunlight when properly aligned. This picture, taken over Sweden, shows a sun pillar above the horizon.
