COSMIC MESSAGE
Moonlight illuminates a snowy scene in Alaska, captured on January 17. The first quarter Moon, overexposed near the western horizon, is surrounded by an icy halo. Flanking the Moon are luminous apparitions called moondogs, or paraselenae. These are produced by moonlight refracted through thin, hexagonal, plate-shaped ice crystals in the atmosphere.
