Dust Pillar of the Carina Nebula

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

This cosmic pillar of gas and dust, over a light-year long, is being eroded by a star hidden within its head. The star, though unseen, ejects energetic beams that slowly destroy its surroundings. Similar battles occur throughout the Carina Nebula, where stars will eventually win, dispersing these pillars over the next 100,000 years.
