Light Echoes from V838 Mon
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
In 2002, the star V838 Mon suddenly expanded, becoming the brightest star in the Milky Way, then faded. The image from the Hubble Space Telescope shows light echoes from this event. The flash illuminated surrounding dust, which then reflected the light back towards us, creating the illusion of expanding material.
