Comet PANSTARRS and the Andromeda Galaxy

NASA APOD · Pavel Smilyk
COSMIC MESSAGE

Comet PANSTARRS is currently passing near the Andromeda Galaxy (M31). Both appear to be roughly the same angular size from Earth, a striking coincidence. While the comet's tail spans about 15 times the diameter of the Sun, the Andromeda galaxy is about 70 billion times larger. This image captures them together, a brief alignment in the sky.
