M64: The Black Eye Galaxy

NASA APOD · Martin Pugh
COSMIC MESSAGE

Messier 64, also known as the Black Eye Galaxy, is a spiral galaxy 17 million light-years away in Coma Berenices. Its distinctive dark dust lanes give it a "heavy-lidded" appearance. These enormous dust clouds obscure the central region of the galaxy, and they are active with star formation.
