The Richat Structure in the Sahara Desert of Mauritania is nearly 50 kilometers across and easily visible from space. Once thought to be an impact crater, its flat middle and lack of shock-altered rock suggest otherwise. It's a dome of layered sedimentary rock, exposed by erosion.
