The Sombrero Galaxy from Hale

COSMIC MESSAGE

The Sombrero Galaxy, M104, is named for its distinctive hat-like appearance. This is due to an unusually large central bulge of old stars and prominent, dark dust lanes that we see nearly edge-on. The diffuse glow of the central bulge, containing billions of stars, is visible in this image from the Hale Telescope.
