Comet Between Fireworks and Lightning

In January 2007, the sky above Perth, Australia, offered a spectacular show. Fireworks lit up the foreground as part of Australia Day celebrations. Distant lightning flashed from a thunderstorm on the right. The most striking sight, however, was Comet McNaught, visible through the clouds near the image center. This remarkably bright comet was a temporary visitor, making a dramatic appearance against a backdrop of terrestrial and atmospheric events.
