A Rare Hybrid Solar Eclipse

NASA APOD · Left: Fred Espenak - Right: Stephan Heinsius
COSMIC MESSAGE

In 2005, a rare hybrid solar eclipse occurred, appearing as either total or annular depending on the observer's location. From a ship west of the Galapagos, the eclipse was total, with the Moon perfectly covering the Sun's disk. This photograph captures the extensive solar corona, the Sun's outer atmosphere, which is only visible during a total eclipse. The delicate streamers of the corona reveal the Sun's magnetic field lines.
