Bright Supernova in M82

COSMIC MESSAGE
Astronomers found a new supernova, SN 2014J, in the nearby bright galaxy M82, also known as the Cigar Galaxy. This image, taken on January 23rd, points to the exciting new event. M82 is a popular target for telescopes in the northern hemisphere, located near the Big Dipper. The supernova was first spotted by teaching fellow Steve Fossey and his astronomy students.
