Eerie pillars of light ring the edges of this "little planet" image, which is actually a panoramic view from Siilinjärvi, Finland. The light pillars are formed by flat ice crystals fluttering in very cold air near the surface. These crystals reflect upward-directed light from ground sources, creating the vertical shafts of light.
