Even on a quiet day, the Sun's surface is a busy place. This image, taken in ultraviolet light, shows sunspot group AR 9169 as a bright area near the horizon. The dark regions are cooler, but still thousands of degrees Celsius. The bright gas flowing around the sunspots is over a million degrees Celsius, for reasons still unknown.
