At the heart of a swirling disk of hot gas, a black hole likely resides, though it cannot be seen directly. Studies of the light from this gas, like that around GRO J1655-40, indicate the black hole's presence and characteristics. The gas around GRO J1655-40 flickers 450 times a second, consistent with a central object about seven times the Sun's mass.
