Io in True Color

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Io, Jupiter's moon, is the strangest moon in the Solar System. This picture, taken in July 1999 by the Galileo spacecraft, attempts to show Io in its true colors. Io's colors come from sulfur and molten silicate rock. Its surface is kept very young by active volcanoes. Jupiter's intense tidal gravity stretches Io, damping wobbles caused by Jupiter's other Galilean moons.
