Deep shadows on Mars create a high-contrast scene in this image from the HiRISE camera on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Taken on January 24, it spans 1.5 kilometers across a sand dune field in a southern highlands crater. The sun, only 5 degrees above the horizon, illuminates just the dune crests. Bright ripples of frost appear as winter approaches the southern hemisphere.
