Mammatus Clouds over Nebraska

NASA APOD · Jorn Olsen Photography
COSMIC MESSAGE

Normally, cloud bottoms are flat because moist, warm air condenses into water droplets at a specific height. However, under certain conditions, cloud pockets can form. These pockets contain large droplets of water or ice that fall into clear air as they evaporate, creating these bubble-like mammatus clouds, often near thunderstorms.
